Spring 2017: Ganja La to Langtang & Yala Peak

A year after Rick, Dendi & I trekked the Langtang Valley, Nepal was rocked by two massive earthquakes . . . the Valley, with its steep & high walls, bore the brunt of both temblors, the first just to the west and the second just to the east. On April 25, the earthen walls 2.5 miles above Langtang Village shook so violently that it unleashed itself — its rocks and mud and mountains of ice and snow — onto the village of Langtang far below. As the monster avalanche moved down the mountain gathering steam, it sucked up everything in its path, becoming ever wider as it descended. By the time it hit the valley floor, it was 1.5 miles wide and had somehow managed to target the heart of the village, essentially burying the village and its inhabitants alive.

Two weeks later, another massive 7.4 magnitude aftershock rattled the Himalaya, multiplying the misery upon a Valley with a baseline of malnourished kids, difficult access to health care, monsoon landslides and rampant poverty. With each aftershock over the rest of 2015, more ice, snow and earth rained down on Langtang, effectively cutting off its economic lifeline of trekking tourism.

Today, the shaking has stopped, trails are being repaired, and trekkers are slowly beginning to return to the Valley. Our trek in the Spring of 2017 looks to help Langtang on its road to recovery and offer you a big adventure! Beginning in Nepal's capital of Kathmandu, we walk out its valley, up and over the challenging Ganja La Pass, drop into the village of Kyanjin Gompa (pictured below), then finish things off with an exciting, non-technical climb of the 18,000 foot Yala Peak.
